Pregnancy Justice Testified at the New York Commission on Human Rights’ Public Hearing

On November 12, 2020 the New York City Commission on Human Rights held a public hearing on proposed amendments to clarify protections from discrimination that occur on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions, lactation, and sexual and reproductive health decisions. Pregnancy Justice testified at the hearing focusing on pregnancy discrimination in the context of health care. We highlighted the case of Rinat Dray, a woman who was forced to undergo cesarean surgery by doctors at Northwell Health’s Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) pursuant to an undisclosed policy authorizing medical interventions, including major surgery, on pregnant patients without their consent and without court order.
